Kestrels, or sparrow hawks as they are sometimes called are a small colourful hawk often seen perched on telephone/hydro wires looking for prey in the grasses below.
Almost wiped out by DDT, they have made a comeback that is heart warming to see.
The copper disc has grasses and found objects embedded in it representative of the kestrel's word of grasslands.

This piece quotes the children's rhyme "Lady Bug Lady Bug, fly away home..." and references the endangered status of the native North American Lady Bug. Native Lady Bugs have nine spots and have been severely over taken by the introduce European seven spot Lady Bug to the point of near extinction.
